Sheriff Hutton

Sheriff Hutton , England

URPoint Details

The long main street climbs gently up from the medieval church, past the village green where little flights of steps lead to the brick and stone cottages above.

Although York Minster can be seen in the distance, it is the gaunt and ragged ruins of Sheriff Hutton Castle which dominates the village.

The castle built originally in about 1400 by Bertram de Bulmer, Sheriff of York has been replaced by another castle built in the 1380s. In the 1400s it became a favourite residence of Richard III and later in the 17th century fell into disrepair. Many of the older houses in the village are built of the castle’s stone.

The Church of St Helen and Holy Cross dates in part from Norman times, but with 14th and 15th century additions. Prince Edward, only son of Richard III who died a year before his father’s defeat by Henry VII at Bosworth Field is said to have been buried here in 1484. There is an alabaster effigy to commemorate him. There is also an earlier monument to a 14th century knight.
