Parking 200m from entrance in winter, 50m in summer; picnics welcome. Disabled visitors may park 20m from entrance. Access to castle and grounds: via grass surface, mainly smooth with some uneven patches, and impacted gravel all parts; accessible to wheelchair users (except 6 steps to chapel area) benches provided. Toilets access via steep grass slop (difficult in winter).
The ruins of this early 12th century castle are a testament of the 16 days it took Cromwell to capture it during the Civil War, after which it was abandoned. Built between 1107 and 1139 by Bishop Roger, Henry I's Chancellor and was besieged twice.
