There are some delightful buildings of historical and architectural beauty here with a medieval church, two castles and a public school.
Founded in the 8th century as a cathedral is the church of St Mary built of golden Ham Hill stone with its Saxon doorway in a mainly 15th century building with Norman arch supports.
New Sherborne Castle is not actually a castle but a mansion built in 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh.
The almshouses founded in 1437 were extended in the 19th century has an attractive chapel with an exceptional triptych painted in oak and dates from about 1475 and is probably German or Flemish.
