A long rambling village where on the village green is a curious old 18th century lock-up, with the inscription over one window ‘Do well, and fear not’ and above the other ‘Be sober, Be vigilant’.
St Botolph’s Church has only remains of its former building, built from monies left by Maud, Countess of Salisbury in 1424. The walls are of squared flint with brick dressings, and the windows with two-centred arches have simple Perpendicular tracery.
Nicholas Hawksmoor, the architect is buried under the yew trees in the churchyard.
