The River Ouse has flowed through the village since Saxon times.
Set amid lovely countryside is the attractive village with many old cottages, and houses including the 17th century The Grange, and Colworth House an early Georgian building.
In the 12th century the Knights Templar held land here, followed by the Knights Hospitallers until the Reformation.
In the 17th century mat making was a local craft, using rushes from the river banks.
Not far from the village is an Iron Age settlement and pieces of pottery have been found dating from the 1st century.
