Superb walking country stretches on both side of the A6 around Shap and motorists can park off the main road.
Westmorland’s Borrowdale is 7m south of Shap and is a fascinating peaty valley, and the surrounding Bretherdale, Roundthwaite and Whinfell commons are full of wildlife and rugged beauty. At High Borrow Bridge just west the Duke of Cumberland’s forces fought the troops of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.
