URPoint Details
The museum is fully accessible and much of the garden is level grass. Raised herb beds are easily accessible outside the museum doors, however parts of the garden have uneven ground with raised stone foundations and there are steep steps to the upper level of the main herb garden.
Founded by King Alfred in 888 (notable also for his burnt cakes). His daughter Aethelgifu was the first known Abbess. Henry VIII closed the Abbey in 1539 and it quickly fell into disrepair.
