URPoint Details
At the time of the Norman Conquest Geoffrey de Mandeville granted land to Sigisweard (pronounced sayward) the Dane, and when he died the land passed to his grandson Albold de Pouncyn.
Pounce Hall was rebuilt and parts date from 1460.
There are some magnificent houses in the area including Everards a 14th century yeoman's farm with a thatched coach house.
The Towers was built by an eccentric William Gayton in 1830-50 who fought with all the builders which is the reason why it took so long in building this grand house. He was declared bankrupt in 1851 and died in the poorhouse a year later. It has been a public school and became a private residence in 1875.
