Where the River Ribble flows through the Aire Gap, Settle has grown as a major market centre.
It is a good walking area at the heart of some of the best Yorkshire limestone scenery.
Local caves have yielded finds from prehistory, with many bones, ranging from elephant, rhinoceros and hippopotami to bone of Stone Age and Iron Age men, originate from Victoria Cave, 2 miles northeast of town.
