The birthplace of Gilbert White the naturalist who was born here in 1720 at ‘the Wakes’
The village is clustered round Plestor Green, once the market place.
There is a great view of the village from Selborne Hangar a steep beech covered hill west of the village, and is topped by a boulder called the Wishing Stone.
