Housed in the original 1800 village meeting place, a museum which traces the savings bank movement from its founding here in 1810 by the Rev. Henry Duncan to its growth and spread worldwide.
There are also displays of the Ruthwell Friendly Society from 1795, an early insurance scheme providing ‘sick pay’, widows pensions, funeral grants and the chance to buy staple foods at cost price.
