URPoint Details
This 13th century St Peter's Church (Churches Conservation Trust) offers something of the scale and lightness of Dutch church interiors of the Reformation, with its tall arcades and clear glass in most windows. The brickwork of its central tower and Flemish cupola, which dominate this Cinque ports skyline and date from the collapse of the previous tower in 1661, show the influence of refugees from the low countries in the 16th and 17th centuries as does the gable of the vestry at the southeast corner. The west end has traces of Norman work, but the lower part of the tower, nave and chancel are 13th century and the north aisle, with its three wall-tombs show 14th century work.
