Gallows Field, Strand Street was once the town’s place of execution. One mile north are the extensive ruins of the Roman fortress

The Pilgrims, Strand Street, consists of two 14th century merchants' houses - both were built with the upper floor overhanging the narrow street.

St Bartholomew's, New Street is one of the oldest established hostels for travellers and pilgrims, dating back to 1190.
