URPoint Details
Sandon is a small village, to the south-east of Chelmsford with a Norman church dedicated to St Andrew.
The village green's oak tree is beautiful, and around the green some of the houses date back to the 16th century.
Runaway brides in the 17th century did not have to dash to Scotland to obtain a quick wedding, the Reverend Gilbert Dillingham was only too willing to oblige here. He undertook many marriages and it is recorded that he performed 511 between 1615 and 1635, including a daughter of the rector of Chelmsford, using an assumed name as did lots of others.
