URPoint Details
Runaway brides in the 17th century did not have to dash to Scotland to obtain a quick wedding, the Reverend Gilbert Dillingham was only too willing to oblige here. He undertook many marriages and it is recorded that he performed 511 between 1615 and 1635, including a daughter of the rector of Chelmsford, using an assumed name as did lots of others.
