Samuel Crompton was born in Firwood Fold, off Crompton Way, Bolton on the 3 December 1753. He was the inventor of the spinning mule, a machine that revolutionised the industry worldwide and which brought the cotton industry to the town where it flourished. He died 26 June 1827 in Bolton.
