URPoint Details
White and colour-washed cottages and houses under rounded thatch stand among trees and gardens on both sides of the village street.
The New Inn is 17th century, the granite tower of the Church of St Andrew is 15th century and the five granite crosses depict the ‘Prayer Book Rebellion’.
The uprising was against a decree of Edward VI introducing a Prayer Book in English to replace Latin used throughout the country.
The rebels besieged Exeter for five weeks but were eventually driven back and the ringleaders hanged in London.
The church of St Andrew is light and spacious and has chairs instead of fixed pews and has a marble font dating back to 1100.
