Saltwood Castle although a private home was originally Norman and built in 1160 One winter evening 10 years later four knights, Fitzurze, de Tracy, de Morville and le Bret, rode from the castle for Canterbury, there to assassinate Thomas a Becket.
The castle was granted to the archbishop of Canterbury by King John, but it became a royal possession being a ‘gift’ from Cranmer to Henry VIII.
It fell into ruinous state but was restored in the Victorian era.
