The site for the cathedral or so reputed was chosen by the fall of an arrow.
The first sight of this majestic cathedral is impressive, and is Early English in style. The magnificent spire rises 404ft tall and is the highest in England was added in the 14th century. The cloisters and chapter house were added later.
The west front has tier upon tier of niches, most of which are empty. The nave of 198ft has changed little and it is an uncluttered beauty. There are many beautiful tombs and in the north transept is the oldest clock in England dating back to 1386, made of wrought iron and with no dial, it only strikes the hour.
The choir has a beautiful 13th century roof painting covered by Wyatt but later restored. In the octagonal chapter house the stone vaulting flies away from one single pillar and a series of fine sculptures adorn a stone plinth around the walls.
