The Normans created a castle, the first Salisbury Cathedral and the Bishop\'s Palace. From the castle ramparts there are fine views of the surrounding countryside.
This is one of the most beautiful cities in England with many architectural styles and with a medieval bridge spanning the rivers of the Avon and Nadder.
Joiner’s Hall in St Ann Street is 16th century, Shoemaker’s Guildhall is 17th century and the Guildhall is 18th century. The Poultry Cross in Silver Street is 15th century and Frowd’s Almshouses and Trinity Hospital are mostly 18th century.

There are so many delightful period inns one being the George Hotel built in 1320 is where Samuel Pepys once slept in a silken bed.
St Martin’s Church is the oldest church in the city dating back to before the Early English period, but with later additions and is mostly Perpendicular.
