The village situated on the edge of Breckland, in its centre is a large privately owned mere, as old as the last Ice Age, where it has been said, were once lake dwellings. The site of Pages Farm, still a farmhouse was a thriving farmstead recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
A small Romano-British market town prospered in the southern half of the village for at least 400 years or more.
