Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden , England

URPoint Details

Ancient town which has revolved around its market for many generations.

The medieval market rows are well preserved and timber-framed buildings abound, many decorated with parguetting.

The quaint and winding streets are steeped in history and is a very enjoyable town to wander around.

The magnificent drinking fountain in the centre of the market square is Victorian.

The name of the town was derived from the Saffron Crocus.

The castle was built in the 12th century.

Worth a visit is the Common & Turf Maze, formerly Castle Green, which played host to a Royal Tournament in 1252. The Maze is unique, is the largest type in the world and is one of only a few remaining turf mazes in England. Basically circular with 17 circuits, four bastions at equal distances around the circumference give the maze a total diameter of 132ft. The pathway is almost one mile in length and the central goal is the mound. The original plan for the maze dated September 5, 1768, is in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
