URPoint Details
The village is notable for its fine Runic cross, 18ft high which stands in a special apse in the church.
On it is carved, in Runic characters a poem – Dream of the Cross’ it is written in the first person, as if the cross were talking and represents the earliest-known phrases in the English language.
The poem is in West Saxon dialect and may be by the Anglo-Saxon poet Caedmon.
