Situated on the River Clyde it remains the oldest Scottish Royal Burgh since being created by David I in the 12th century.
Clydesdale horses were once tethered in the main wide street.
In 1679 the Covenanters placed a declaration to the Town Cross which led to the Battle of Drumclog near Loudounhill and Bothwell Brig’.
