Rushton Triangular Lodge, (EH), on the A6.
Open April to end-September, daily 10am-6pm. Closed 1-2pm for lunch. Small admission charge; car parking for 5 cars; dogs allowed in certain areas only; no toilets; picnics welcome in grounds.
Disabled parking in lay-by, about 50m from property across a busy road. Access to the monument and grounds via small step and ramp to ticket office; access within Lodge not possible for wheelchair users; however, the main interest of the Lodge is its exterior; spiral staircase to upper floor may be difficult for ambulant disabled visitors; smooth grass in grounds with impacted gravel paths.
Through this extraordinary building, architecture is used to express religious beliefs. Built by Sir Thomas Tresham, a devout Catholic in 1593, who also built Lyveden. The lodge symbolises the Holy Trinity, playing on the number three with 3 sides, 3 floors and trefoil windows. Reputed to be the meeting place of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators. It is difficult today to understand the full meaning but the building is nevertheless quite beautiful.
