In the 10th century the Normans built a settlement here for Aethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Greats daughter.
The town’s industry began in the 18th century when a barge-dock was built on the Manchester–Liverpool Canal and quarrying became important as did the local sandstone which was used to build the docks in New York.
