Dogs on leads in grounds only; guide dogs admitted. Disabled parking on firm gravel with flat paths to hall and garden. Hall: wheelchair access to entrance hall, otherwise many steps & narrow passages; access to Great Hall only; can be arranged photograph album of interior of house available for those unable to gain access. Garden: good level paths. Shop: over level ground through cobbled courtyard.
Originally an H-plan house dating from 1530 for Sir Robert Hesketh, illegitimate son of a family which had been lords of the manor for at lease seven generations. The imposing great hall, the cross-bar of the H, survives the west wing has gone, and the east wing was rebuilt in the 1720s, connecting with a Caroline accommodation block. The Heskeths left the Old Hall in the 18th century to build a more fashionable Neo-classical house half a mile away.The Old Hall was reoccupied by the family in the 1820s, when the east wing was enlarged and refitted in a Tudor Gothic style by John Foster the Younger for Thomas Henry Hesketh;
