Originally an H-plan house dating from 1530 for Sir Robert Hesketh, illegitimate son of a family which had been lords of the manor for at lease seven generations. The imposing great hall, the cross-bar of the H, survives the west wing has gone, and the east wing was rebuilt in the 1720s, connecting with a Caroline accommodation block. The Heskeths left the Old Hall in the 18th century to build a more fashionable Neo-classical house half a mile away.The Old Hall was reoccupied by the family in the 1820s, when the east wing was enlarged and refitted in a Tudor Gothic style by John Foster the Younger for Thomas Henry Hesketh;
