The world’s most famous gardens and parks is also a quarantine station for rare and foreign plants arriving in the country. The gardens can be divided roughly into two sections, the west being largely woodland and arboretum and the east part more formally laid out in lawns and gardens with various houses for the specimens that need special climatic conditions. There are tropical houses, a temperate house, Australia house, and many more.
Of particular interest is Decimus Burton’s Palm House, an early example of glass and wrought iron built between 1844 and 1848. The Chinese Pagoda is a Kew landmark, standing 163ft high in 10 stories, the bottom one being 26ft in diameter and 18ft high. Of several royal buildings only three remain: the Dutch House, generally known as Kew Palace Queen’s Cottage and the Orangery.
