A Norman castle converted into a house in the 16th century. Set high in a hillside in a commanding position, this famous stronghold was built by William the Conqueror. Visited by royalty over the centuries, including King John, who in 1226 left behind an iron chest, which may be seen within these stout strong walls. Henry VIII leased the castle in 1530 to Edward Watson, a prominent landowner, who restored the Norman parts which were in disorder, with stone transported from the quarries at Weldon and Southwick and timber from the forests at Geddington and Gretton. Apart from a brief period when it was occupied by the Roundheads in the Civil War, his ancestors have made their home within this mighty fortress ever since. Impressionist and modern paintings, furniture, china, arms and armour.
Extensive views and over 12 acres of gardens ranging from a formal circular rose garden to a wild garden in a ravine and an ancient yew hedge.
