Rochford is steeped in history, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book and the first settlement was by the Romans in the 2nd century.
Along South Street you will come to the cruciform where the four roads converge as on a compass - North Street, South Street, East Street and West Street. This cruciform is one of the few remaining in the country.
South Street can boast many old and well maintained properties dating back many years.
Weir Pond Road, aptly named many years ago, still has many of the original cottages, now listed buildings, and revelling in such delightful names as Lilac Cottage, Rose Cottage etc.
The Market Square originally housed many old wooden buildings and every Thursday a cattle market was held until the middle of the 1900s.
