No dogs allowed. Disabled parking 100m from entrance via steep road and steps disabled visitors can be set down in grounds please make arrangements in advance. Tape tour with hearing loop available. Access to keep is not possible for wheelchair users, and difficult for many ambulant disabled visitors, because of narrow doorways, many steps, and uneven spiral stairs to upper floors.
Grounds have level tarmac paths and smooth grass in surrounding public park (not English Heritage). Toilets in grounds, 30m from keep. Kiosk in grounds.
Built in the 11th century to guard the point where the Roman road of Watling Street crossed the River Medway, the size and position of this grand Norman bishop's castle, founded on the Roman city wall, eventually made it an important royal stronghold for several hundred years.
The keep is truly magnificent - over 100 feet high, with walls 12 feet thick. At the top you will be able to enjoy fine views over the river and surrounding city of Rochester.
