Robert the Bruce, born on 11 July 1274 in Turnberry Castle,
Crowned King of Scotland in 1306 and reigned till 1329, he was instrumental in the Wars of Independence against English Occupation.
Bruce secured Scottish independence from England militarily — if not diplomatically — at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. An English army led by Edward II in person trying to relieve the siege of Stirling Castle was decisively defeated in an atypical set-piece battle.
He died on 7 June 1329, his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey but his heart is believed to have been interred in Melrose Abbey
