URPoint Details
Completed in April 1980, and is a tall guillotine structure, over 100 feet high, which was built to protect the city from flooding. Over 90% of the City is already below the level of the highest recorded tide (which flooded the Old Town in September 1969), and as the sea level is increasing at a rate of 2½ feet every 100 years, the flooding problem will get worse. The barrier is lowered in times of high danger and prevents tidal water entering the River Hull, this minimising the danger to Hull at a stroke.
