The Saxons were here and they left behind a crypt supposedly of St Wilfred in 672 and lies beneath the nave in the cathedral.
Each night at 9pm the city ‘Wakeman’ blows his horn – a custom known as setting the watch. The custom dates back over 1000 years when the city was handed to the care of the Wakeman. The 14th century half-timbered Wakeman’s House in the square was once the hornblower’s residence.
