Ripley - North Yorkshire

Ripley

URPoint Details

A village of grey stone cottages and houses, cobbled square with a market cross and stocks, with the majority of the houses terraced and set back from the single main street. At one corner of the square is a life-size stone boar, symbolising an association of 700 years between Ripley and the Ingilby family. The estate was granted to Thomas Ingilby who saved Edward III when he was attacked by a boar in Knaresborough Forest.

The 14th century Church of All Saints still carries the marks of bullets in the stone-work when Roundhead soldiers executed several of the Ingilby men captured at Marston Moor.
