The long main street has many fine Tudor and Georgian houses and those on the north side are reached across little bridges spanning a brook.

The excavated site of a notable Roman villa lies half a mile southeast of the village.

The White Hart Inn takes its name from when Henry VII spared the life of a white hart when hunting nearby. It is said that he put a fine gold collar on it and took it to Windsor.

Hightown Common, 2 miles east lies on the edge of forest and the views from here to Dorest and down to Christchurch nine miles to the south.
