Parking; picnics welcome in grounds; dogs on leads only. Disabled parking beside entrance side gate can be opened for cars to drive close to the abbey please phone in advance if possible. Access to Abbey and grounds; wheelchair access possible to most of site via fine loose gravel paths and smooth grass, though there are some steps and the site is on a slope benches available. Special tape tour available, with hearing loop available. Toilets in car park not adapted and difficult for wheelchairs. Shop/museum has easy access. Refreshment are has restricted space.
In a deeply wooded valley by the River Rye you can see some of the most spectacular monastic ruins in England, dating from the 12th century.
The church has the earliest Cistercian nave in Britain. A fascinating exhibition shows how successfully the Cistercians at Rievaulx ran their many businesses and explains the part played by Abbot Ailred, who ruled for twenty years.
