The town stands on the slopes of a hill rising from the Thames, and takes its name from a palace rebuilt by Henry VII. Elizabeth I died here in 1603, but little survives except a brick gatehouse beside the attractive green.
The Terrace on top of the famous Richmond Hill, gives sweeping views of the Thames and leads to the main gate into Richmond Park all 2400 acres of open land where deer roam.
