The fort covered an area of about six acres and date back to the Roman landing in AD43 and known as Rutupiae.
The fortified walls are about 12ft in diameter and heights of up to 24ft and the massive foundations of a triumphal arch which stood 80 feet high still survive.
It guarded the entrance to the Wantsum Channel and stood at the beginning of Watling Street, the great road that led to London and on to Chester.
