URPoint Details

One of England’s most ancient towns surrounded by hills and overlooking the River Trent, was once the capital of Saxon kingdom of Mercia.

The crypt below St Wystan’s church, its roof supported by four twisted columns is one of the best survivals of Anglo-Saxon architecture in the country, and was probably built around AD975.
About 200 years later a great priory was founded but fell into disrepair after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. On these ruins Repton School was built in 1557.
The priory gatehouse is preserved as well as the original guest hall which is now the school library.

One of the oldest buildings in the town is the Prior Overtorn Tower dates from 1438.
