URPoint Details

The ancient royal burgh has had a charter since 1396 and the title of Baron Renfrew is held by the Prince of Wales as heir apparent to the Scottish throne.

The parish church has a sculptured tomb and a 15th century effigy on the tower.

Blythswood House where in 1685 the Earl of Argyll was captured and later executed at Edinburgh for his part in the Monmouth Rebellion.

West of town on the A8 near a swing bridge by the meeting of the Black and White Cart Waters is the Argyll Stone which was at one time thought to be stained with the blood of the Earl.

West of Renfrew across the Black Cart Water is Inchinnan Church once the property of the Knights Templar and in the churchyard are some preserved Celtic stones, tombs of the Templars and also several mortsafes, recalling the days of ‘bodysnatching’.
