The Romans had a fort here, and there are remains of a Norman church built on an earlier Saxon one.
A quiet town with twin towers which is a landmark for shipping, it has a sand and shingle beach.

This 12th century landmark of twin towers has guided sailors into the Thames estuary for seven centuries, but you can see the walls of a Roman fort, which were erected nearly 2,000 years ago. It stands in a Country Park.
