At the head of Sandside Bay on the lonely coast gave its name to Lord Reay, the Chief of Clan Mackay, with their seat near the sea, northeast at Dounreay Castle now a farm and preserving the 16th century tower.
The church built in the post-Reformation period, is typical of several in the area and in the churchyard are the remains of an older church with a carved Celtic cross-slab.
