URPoint Details
A quiet rural Fenland town that been here since 969 and where 18th century houses now surround the lovely green.
The church of St Thomas a Becket (Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust) lies beside Abbey Green and was originally built in 1180 by the Norman's as an infirmary to the Abbey. The tower was added in 1672. The arcade and chancel are 12th century and the column capitals are most interesting. The stone vault in the chancel is unusual and early in date. Of note is the 13th century font and stained glass.
Close to the town are the villages of Ramsey St Mary's, Ramsey Mereside, Ramsey Heights and Ramsey Forty Foot. Bodsey House, in Ramsey Forty Foot was once the home of the Abbots of Ramsey and has links with the Cromwell family. The chapel is 13th century.
