Raglan Castle is undoubtedly the finest late medieval fortress-palace in Britain. It was begun during the 1430\'s by the powerful Sir William ap Thomas who raised the mighty \'yellow Tower\', a moated stronghold equipped with up-to-date gunports and a unique double drawbridge. His still more successful son, William Lord Herbert, added a palatial double-courtyard mansion, luxurious within and defended by a formidable gatehouse and many-towered walls. Built regardless of cost and embellished with carvings, the castle was made more splendid by Herbert\'s Elizabethan descendants. Yet Raglan remained a fortress, enduring a fierce thirteen-week siege during the Civil war.
The strength and high quality of this outstanding monument to medieval family pride is still obvious today.
