Queen Street Mill Textile Museum - Burnley

Queen St, Harle Syke, Burnley , England

URPoint Details

Queen Street Mill is the only surviving steam powered cotton mill in Britain, built in 1894 when the cotton industry was at its height and Burnley was the weaving centre of the world.
The working mill remains essentially intact giving a unique insight into the real conditions of Victorian factory life. During opening hours, the magnificent steam engine, 'Peace' throbs quietly, powering over 300 deafening Lancashire looms in the imposing weaving shed, where hundreds of metres of cotton cloth are produced weekly by staff in authentic 1890's costume.
In addition to the weaving mill, a traditional film theatre regularly shows a wide range of archival and entertainment films and refreshments are available in the attractive coffee shop.
The interesting and well-stocked shop sells souvenirs and craft products including steam woven goods manufactured at the mill - in particular the famous 'union Shirt', a traditional garment of working men in the 19th century and now a best-selling high quality fashion shirt.
