Sir Richard Arkwright 1732-92, invented the Spinning Wheel which aided the production of yarn and revolutionised the textile industry.
One of the most decisive battle of the Civil War was fought here in 1648 when Cromwell’s army killed 20, 000 Scots. In 1745, yet again, there was another war when Bonnie Prince Charlie captured Preston on his way south from Scotland to London.
