Presteigne

Presteigne

Presteigne , Wales

URPoint Details

Presteigne stands on the bank of the River Lugg, at the boundary between England and Wales, in the rich green countryside so characteristic of the Welsh Marches

A priest hole, where a Roman Catholic priest remained hidden from persecution for some years, can be seen in the 17th-century Radnorshire Arms.

In the churchyard is the grave of Mary Morgan, hanged in 1805 aged 17 for the murder of her illegitimate child. Her lover, who was a party to the crime and gave her the knife with which to do it, then sat as a member of the jury that condemned her. A royal pardon was granted but, sadly, arrived too late to save her.
