A straggling village with yellow stone houses leads up to a combe in the chalk downs.
The BBC in 1968 thought that this village was the least changed in the 20th century and that they would still see a blacksmith, and see the squire and the vicar trotting off to visit the needy.
The hill called Eggardon towers 800ft high and commands excellent views along with and Iron Age fort.
The impressive Church of St Mary is a Grade I Listed building, partly rebuilt in 1859, has a fine ornamented Norman chancel arch and a 15th century south doorway. Grade II* listed building
