Originally a hospice for pilgrims, this 16th century chapel became the Garrison Church after the Dissolution. Expertly restored in the 1860s but fire-bombed in 1941, the chancel survived and there is plenty to see.
Dedicated to St Nicholas, the guardian of sailors, the church is all that remains of a l3th century travellers' hospice. In later, military use it is said to have served as Henry, VIII's headquarters during the French attempted invasion of 1545. More happily, the church was the scene of a royal wedding in 1662 when Charles II married Catherine of Braganza following her arrival from Portugal. The chancel still serves as a church.
